Retail Rants

Listen To Me

New week new rant, and per usual always just as good as the last one. This weeks I want you to Listen to me. There have been so many different instances where I have told a customer one thing and they totally discount what I said to then end up telling me I’m right. 🙄

Know Your Size

When you come into a clothing store and you know you will need help finding something in particular, please come in with the intentions of enlisting some help. Also try to listen to the associate that is actually there to assist you. In my store we sell both men and women clothing and I can tell you for a fact that it is way easier to try and help a man than a woman. (In most cases, not all, but most).

Let’s get down to business, I was assisting a customer who needed help picking out dress shirts. When I say he needed help, he had never shopped in our store before. I love dressing people so helping to style anyone is never a problem. I don’t have a problem with voicing my opinion when asked, nor do I hold back on any thoughts that I have going on in my head.

The Conversation

Me: “Are you finding everything ok?”

Customer: “Umm yes, but I need a little help. I need to change up my wardrobe a little bit and I need your opinion on these shirts.”

Me: “Ok, show me what you got.”

The customer proceed to show the three dress shirts he picked out for himself.

Me: “Ok, ok, nice choices, there is only one problem.”

Customer: “What’s that?”

Me: “You have three different fits. You do know that all three of these shirts will fit you completely different, right? I think you need to stick with the fitted and put the Modern and Extra Slim back.

Customer: “Well I think I’m gonna try on all three to see how I like the fit.”

Me: “No problem, we actually have tryon shirts in the fitting room.”

Customer: “But I want to see how these shirts look on me.”

Me: Ok, that’s fine

PAUSE: Now I want to know how trying on a tryon shirt that is the EXACT same size as the folded shirt in your hand will look and/or fit you any differently?? It’s the SAME exact shirt! Different color yes, no pattern, but the actual fit will be the exact same. The colors or patterns will not make the shirt fit you any differently sir. 😤🤬🙊 I digress.

I direct the customer to the fitting room. Less than twenty minutes later the customer comes out and says…

Customer: “You were right, the fitted fit me the best.” 😲😒

Big Facts

So not only was I right but he definitely came out with just the ONE shirt. Which means his 🤬 left the other two shirts that he opened in the fitting room for me to clean up later. Then to top it off dude actually but the opened shirt that he tried on, on the table and went back into the wall to pick up a unfolded shirt.

Now in my mind I having a conversation with myself so I don’t loose my job. Here are my thoughts…Why in the hell are you throwing the shirt that you unfolded, took the clips out, threw the board and the paper on the floor in the fitting room on this nicely organized table??? Do you have no home training? You actually want me to pick up after you all over the 🤬 store?

Someone PLEASE tell me what was wrong with the shirt HE tried on? YOU opened the shirt sir. So now that it’s not nice and crisply folded you want to take the unopened shirt with you? Nope, that’s not how it works here sir.

The Disclaimer

If you come into any store and you enlist help from an associate and you do something as crazy as my customer did today, please know you are the topic of discussion at the end of the night. Hell, I’ll be talking about you as I’m picking up 99 pins off the floor, along with the tissue paper and boards. I did my job, I assisted you with your problems and I let you open up three perfectly folded shirts. Even though I not only told you which button up you needed, but I also insisted on you trying on the tryon shirts. 😒😤

Moral of the Story

Let me help you, help yourself. Listen to the words that are coming out of my mouth and please, please, please try on the try on shirts. And if you insist on trying on a folded shirt, at least be nice enough to buy the one YOU opened! 😒 But again, I digress. 😄

Girl being a waitress is it’s own struggle! I could never! I definitely tried. It’s hard at times but it is a learning experience. Thanks for checking it out! 😊

I never worked as a stylist, but I have retail experience from working at Old Navy for 3 years and this post brought back so many memories! I distinctly remember men being more receptive to help too (mostly because they were lost and wanted to leave ASAP haha). Your customers are lucky to have an attentive person who truly cares helping them out!

Yaaaaasssssss girl! Nothing has changed at all! I try so hard to be the best associate…..sometimes they just make it so hard. I’m glad to know other retail associates can understand my struggle! Thanks for the read!

I have never worked clothing retail but my daughter did for years – this story is so familiar! On the other hand – I’ve never understood why men’s shirts come folded with all those pins and cardboard inserts, and women’s just get put on hangers.
