Natural Hair Essentials
If you know me personally, then you know, I never had the intentions of ever going natural. I loved the way my hair looked with a perm. How easy it was to manage on a daily basis. But, in 2017 I found out that I would have to make two major surgeries. That’s when I learned from my beautician that anesthesia would mess with my hair and that a perm would not be good for my continued use. Hint’s the start of my natural hair journey. I had no intentions of wearing my natural hair out, so I stayed with a protective style. When I did wear it out it was blown dry and flat ironed.

Everyone knows wearing your natural hair out takes time, patience, money, and a huge learning curve. After five years of protective styles and wearing my hair periodically. I have finally decided to take the leap and wear my natural hair, in it’s natural state this year. So, with that being said we’re going to take this journey together. Here is my list of Natural Hair Essentials for any beginner.
Detangling Brush Pt. 1
If you’re natural you know this is a must! This is the best tool during a good wash, conditioner, and leave in condition. You want to carefully and patiently detangle your hair with this brush. The more gentle you are with the detangling process the less damage you will create in the long run. I bought this BESTOOL Detangling Brush for Black Natural Hair. Comes is five different colors and works wonders.
Detangling Brush Pt. 2
Now this brush that I’m about to talk to you about is perfect for defining your curls especially for a wash and go. Want to know your curl pattern? This brush will bring them to life. I use this brush during the leave in conditioner stage of hair day. My go to brush for this process is the Denman Brush. The one I like to use is the Evolve Detangling Brush. I got a thing for pink when I want too. 😄
Alligator Hair Clips
When it comes time to detangle your hair you will thank me for these goodies. Alligator Hair clips are amazing when it time to detangle your hair into sections. And for beginners like myself, I will probably do smaller sections because I tend to be a little tender headed especially after a protective style. Alligator Styling Sectioning Clips .
Edge Brush
It’s a gift and a curse, these things called edges. But, every black woman knows that they must be tamed. Well, at least to the best of our ability. And the tool to best use is a Edge Brush. Some people use a tooth brush, and that is your choice. But for me and my edges I use this Double Sided Edge Brush. Now, you only need one, but if you’re anything like me, you need a brush on the go. I have a few at home, one in each luggage that I travel with, my backpack, and even one for my car. Don’t judge me! 😂 So, needless to say it’s cheaper to buy them in a pack.
Detangling Comb
Of course if you have to have a good detangling brush, you have to have a good detangling comb. You know your hair better than anyone. If you tender headed the wider the teeth the better. If you’re more into comfort, you’ll want a nice size handle. Make the best decision for you. If you want my recommendation I like the Diane Rake/Rage Black Comb.
Spray Bottle
When taking care of natural hair you have to keep it moist when it’s hair day. Your hair is always more manageable when wet. You can have a spray bottle for just water, and one to moisturize your hair. Typically my moisturize spray bottle have half water, leave in conditioner, tea tree oil, and a growth oil. I shake it up and boom. Now you could always go to the dollar store for a mediocre spray bottle or you could go luxury. I mean your hair does deserve the best right? I use the FLAIROSOL – Spray Bottle. It’s like the Maybach of Spray Bottles. 😎

One-Step Hair Dryer
I’ve done my research on this one and it’s number one in the natural hair care community. It’s cost efficient and it’s works great. It’s a brush and a blow dryer combo. Promotes less work and easy when it comes to drying your hair. Now the goal with natural hair is to not use a lot of heat. But if you’re going to use heat always, ALWAYS use a heat protectant of your choice. The hand held hair dryer I like to use is the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler.
Satin Bonnet
When you think of natural hair care you automatically think satin…no? Satin is like a gift from God. Satin acts as a barrier against moisture absorbing fabrics like cotton. Which is why you need to always cover your hair with a Satin Bonnet or Scarf before bed. You can buy a Satin Bonnet from any hair care store or you can buy this Satin Bonnet.
Satin Scraf
Just like the Satin Bonnet, you will need a Satin Scarf. We all have very diverse hair. And I’m sure you won’t always wear your hair in the same style. As diverse and you would like to wear your hair, you will need diversity in night caps. This is where the Satin Scarf comes into play. You can also buy a Satin Scarf from any hair care store or you can buy this Evolve Satin Wrap Scarf.
Satin Pillowcase
Now, that we have the satin bonnet, and scarf, we have to go one extra step with the satin pillowcase. Not only do they feel good but, for the instances when you bonnet or scarf slips off, you will have that extra layer of protection. Here are my Satin Pillowcases. They come in a two pack and in array of colors and sizes.
Satin Hair Scrunchies
You’ve already learned how important satin is to natural hair care. So, of course when it comes to scrunchies it’s always best to go satin when you can. I ordered a few for wash day and to go out in. You can never have too many right?! 24 Pieces Satin Hair Scrunchies.
Ouch Less Hair Ties
When you can’t go satin go ouch less. You need a hair tie that you can count on to not work against you. Which is why I NEVER use rubber bands. These Goody Ouchless Women’s Polyband Elastic Hair Ties are my go to.
Microfiber Towel
I know you’re wondering why you would need a microfiber towel versus the one you already own at home. Well, we’re going for healthy natural hair. Microfiber towels are gentler on your hair and it will reduce frizz. Who wouldn’t want that on wash day? Here are some similar towels that you might see your beautician using at the shop. TASALON Microfiber Hair Towels.

Hair Steamer
With natural hair you want to retain as much moisture as possible on wash day. This is wear a good hair steamer comes into play. Think of a hair steamer as a spa day for your hair. It opens up your hair cuticles so that sulfate-free shampoos can get rid of the buildup and moisture can flow in. The Hair Steamer I’m going to suggest is a 2-in-1. It comes with a hair steamer and a face steam for the price of one. The ultimate spa day for your hair. Here is the Hair Steamer Kingsteam 2 in 1 I found.
Hair Diffuser
Now, let’s dry this natural hair the right way. The handheld dryer that I have found is not only travel friendly, it’s cost efficient. What more can you ask for, right? You have a blow dryer and three attachment diffusers. Checkout this Ionic Hair Dryer with Diffusers.
Applicator Bottle
Last but not least, on the natural hair essentials will be a applicator bottle. You can use this to mix together your moisturizers and grease your scalp when it gets dry. You can put your leave in conditioner to penetrate the scalp. Once you learn your hair day process you can decide how you want to use the applicator. Here are some 6 Ounce Applicator Bottles.
