Retail Rants

Put the Phone Down

Let me count the ways cell phones are disrespectful when shopping. You walk into the store and instead acknowledging the associate who just greeted you with a smile, you ignore him or her so you can continue a conversation that could have been paused for FIVE seconds. Instead you would rather be disrespectful and carry on your conversation and act as if everyone else in the store is invisible. Well invisible until you need something.

The Register

Or let’s talk about when you get to the register. Now trust me I get it, sometimes the people you have on the phone won’t let you get a word in to at least say “Hold on”, so you continue to listen. Trust me, I’ve been there sooo many times myself as a customer. But since I work in retail and I know how unbelievably RUDE it is, if the person I’m talking to won’t let me speak I simply put the phone down on the counter until I’m done checking out. I give that associate the respect they earned and answer all the questions they have. I mean what does the person on the phone care? They’re not letting you speak anyways.

How about when you come to the register and you are ACTUALLY holding a full on conversation??? Now at my store we specifically ask you for your phone number to obtain your rewards and/or get points, and lord knows a customer will have a fit if they don’t get EVERY point earned for their visit. So we as associates are trying to not only do the right thing but also do our JOB. We could honestly care less about what you are talking about BUT when it interferes with our job, THAT’S when it becomes a problem.

Hold Up!

The one thing that I hate the most is when they are talking on the phone and they give me that “hold on” look. You know that look that says “don’t you see me talking” (inserts neck AND eye roll).

Customers point of view: I know this chick see me on this phone! Why the hell is she talking to me? Ring my stuff up so I can go.

Associates point of view: If you don’t put that phone down and stop wasting my time I’m going to walk away from this register and you can ring the stuff up ya d*** self.

At the end of the day I respect those who respect me! It doesn’t matter to me how old or young a person is, disrespect is disrespect. How would you like it if I came into your place of business and I was your customer and instead of me listening to you I was too busy kee keein on the phone with one of my homegirls ignoring the hell out of whatever you had to say. How would you feel?

Moral of the story: Just be a nice human and PUT THE PHONE DOWN!

At the end of the day, it just boils down to respect. I will just give a hand gesture for acknowledgement but I don’t say anything until they are off the phone because If get those “dont you see I’m on the phone” looks. I prolly won’t be employed although Im just doing my job which is greeting someone within the first 30 sec on them entering. Yes, that’s policy and procedure within almost all retail stores.
