Shopping Is Blind
Welcome back to another edition of my bi-weekly retail rant! This week we are going to talk about the shoppers who come into the store and shop as if they are blind. Hints the title Shopping Is Blind. For those of you who are not use to my rants, it’s a fun way for me to release the stresses of being a retail associate and sometimes manager. You get a quick dose of retail therapy with a dose of realness. It’s all fun and games until it’s NOT! So let’s jump right in shall we?

The Customer
Have you ever been shopping, walked over to the line and got upset because the person at the register was being sooo extra? I mean to the point where you and everyone behind you was getting annoyed? Just imagine how we feel being the associates that have to ring them up. Or better yet the manager in my case, who has to try and solve the problem.
The Conversaion
Me: Ready to check out?
Customer: Yes
Me: Can I get a phone number?
Customer: xxx-xxx-xxxx
Me: Thank you
Customer: How much are those pants?
Me: They are ringing full price $69.95
Customer: Naw, that can’t be right. I got those off of clearance.
Me: They were probably misplaced by another customer.
Customer: Naw, because there were a lot of them over there.
Before I could get another word out my mouth the customer had left the line and started walking to the back. So I started ringing another customer. Next thing I know she walked back up to the register big mad.
Customer: See all of these were on the same rack. (She had about four pairs of pants and proceeded to drop them on the register.)
Me: Bobby can you come to the register please. (Once Bobby got to the register I had him ring up the customer I was working with so I could finish helping the other customer that seemed to be in distress)
Customer: How much are all of these and what’s the difference?
Me: The pants are ringing $27.99. But they are NOT the same pants. The pants you have are wide leg and are long pants. The clearance item you brought up is cropped which means it stops at your calves. I promise you ma’am a customer legit just placed these on the clearance rack, I’m sorry.
If there were more of the same pants on the clearance rack then maybe I could have discounted them for you because that would’ve been a store error, but in this case I will have to charge you what it is currently ringing.
Customer: Well show me where those pants are that are not on clearance.
I got from behind the register walked to the back of the store and showed her were these brand new dress pants were really located at.
Me: See the sale on these pants are buy one get one for 50% off. So that’s why it rang full price.
Customer: So I basically wasted all that time trying to put this outfit together. I’m not paying $70 for a pair of pants. What other pants do yall have in here on sale.
Me: Well ma’am that’s actually the sale on ALL dress pants at this time. If you buy one at full price the other pair will be 50% off. So it doesn’t matter which pair of pants you buy one will be full price.
Customer: Well can you discount the pants to 50% off since I only want one?
Me: No ma’am I can not.
Customer walks back to the front of the register.
Customer: Well I guess I’ll get the outfit.
Me: Bobby can you ring her up for me please?
The Rant
I want to give you a full disclaimer ladies and gentlemen, that when you are nasty to others karma comes into play. I was as calm as I could be when faced with her relentless attitudes. She made me walk to the back of the store to prove to her that the pants she picked up was indeed new and not on clearance. And because you were NOT satisfied with the results you then asked me to give you that one pair of pants on sale.
Like really lady? After you stood here and showed your entire ass. You think that I’m about to help you by discounting a pair of pants because you spent hours shopping in here for a outfit? NO. Matter of fact, Hell No! 😌
In my mind I’m thinking this woman has got to either be blind or just not the brightest crayon in the box. I just said the pants were buy one get one 50%. How did you take that promotion and turn it to let me get 50% off a pair of pants? Oh I see, she thought that because she was soooo sweet that I was going to discount the pants for her?? HA! Remember that thing call Karma? She’s at the front of the register for you to pay full price! Byyyyyeeeee!!!!
Here’s Some Advice
As a customer I want you to see how something as simple as misplacing a item and placing on the clearance rack can cause a complete scene in a store. Not only will this type of behavior affect the time you stand at the register it also creates more work and headaches for the associates.
All you have to do is put your “go backs” or the clothes you tried on and didn’t want back on the fitting room rack or better yet back where you found it. Don’t be that shopping is blind customer I just wrote about today. It’s just not a good look! #JustSaying 🤷🏾♀️
